Canada Post has unveiled a new set of commemorative stamps celebrating three trailblazers of Canadian hip‑hop: Michie Mee, Maestro Fresh Wes, and Muzion. This release marks a rare moment of recognition for artists who helped shape the foundation of Black music in Canada.
Michie Mee, who is widely regarded as Canada’s first prominent female rapper, said she was moved by the honour, calling it a reminder of how far the culture has come. Maestro Fresh Wes whose hit “Let Your Backbone Slide” became the first Canadian hip‑hop single to go platinum described the moment as a milestone not just for himself, but for the entire community that supported the genre’s early rise. Muzion, known for mixing French, English and Haitian Creole into their rhymes. Their multilingual approach showed that Hip-Hop could speak every language and represent every community.
The stamp series highlights the artists contributions at a time where Canadian hip‑hop continues to gain global visibility. For many fans, the recognition feels long overdue, especially for pioneers who built the genre during a period when mainstream support was limited.
