Legendary reggae pioneer Jimmy Cliff has passed away at 81. His family shared that he died after a “seizure followed by pneumonia.”
Known for classics like “Many Rivers to Cross,” “I Can See Cleary Now,” “You Can Get It If You Really Want,” and “Vietnam,” Cliff helped shape the sound of reggae and carried Jamaica’s stories to the world. His starring role in The Harder They Come made him a cultural force, opening the door for reggae’s global rise and inspiring generations of artists.

Born James Chambers in St. James, Jamaica, Cliff emerged from Kingston’s vibrant music scene alongside legends like Bob Marley and Toots Hibbert. His influence stretched across decades — from Grammy-winning albums to collaborations with The Rolling Stones, Wyclef Jean, Sting, Bruce Springsteen, and more.
In 2010, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, cementing his place in music history.
His family shared, “Your support was his strength throughout his whole career.”
